Repairs continue in the 8800 block of South Claiborne Avenue after water main break
For Immediate Release
May 23, 2019

Repairs continue to progress along South Claiborne Avenue today, May 23, 2019, after a water main broke at the Sewerage and Water Board’s (SWBNO) Carrollton Water Plant.

Eastbound traffic on Claiborne will continue to be restricted to one lane between Hollygrove and Monroe streets while the pavement is restored. This could take several days to ensure the integrity of the roadway.

The break occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday in a water main pipe installed as part of the Water Hammer program, a federally financed hazard mitigation project that includes the construction of the two large water towers at the plant. SWBNO and its contractor that installed the main are investigating the cause of the break.

The incident did not impact the city’s water distribution network. Water pressure remained normal throughout New Orleans. After closing valves and isolating the broken section of pipe, operations at the plant returned to normal.

SWBNO will notify the public when the traffic restrictions are lifted.
