NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) announces a significant achievement in its Smart Metering Program: the installation of the 70,000th smart meter, marking the halfway point to the program's completion. This milestone is a key moment in the modernization of New Orleans' utility infrastructure and further demonstrates the utility’s commitment to improve the customer experience. The Smart Metering Program is transforming how SWBNO serves its customers by upgrading meter reading technology and providing greater transparency in billing. With the new smart meters, residents can now access near real-time water use data through a new online customer portal, allowing them to better manage their water consumption and have more control over their water bills. “Reaching the halfway point of the Smart Metering Program is a significant achievement,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “It’s not just about upgrading meters—it’s about enhancing transparency, empowering our residents with their water use data, and ensuring we’re using the best technology to support New Orleans.” “This milestone is just the beginning,” said Ghassan Korban, Executive Director of SWBNO. “By the end of next year, every household in New Orleans will benefit from this game-changing technology. With more precise meter reads and the ability to see your hourly water use data, customers can have more confidence that their bills reflect actual use.” Program Impact: - 42,000+ accounts are now actively using SWBNO’s new online customer account tool to track water consumption.
- Nearly 20,500 customers have been notified about leaks, helping them address issues early and avoid unnecessary charges.
- Customers who have addressed leaks identified by smart meters save approximately $95 on their monthly water bill.
- Saving nearly 50M gallons of water for the city.
The Smart Metering Program will ultimately replace all traditional meters with automatic smart meters across the city, helping to reduce obstacles such as staffing challenges, inclement weather, or old, hard-to-read meters that historically prevented the utility from reading meters every month. The new technology will improve billing accuracy and provide valuable data for future infrastructure planning.
